Paulo Freire once stated: “The teacher is of course an artist, but being an artist does not mean that he or she can make the profile, can shape the students. What the educator does in teaching is to make it possible for the students to become themselves.” As an educator I believe that it is my job to have my students question and inquire about the world around them. When we allow for students to learn about what they are interested about they learn to become themselves. It is Nel Noddings the wrote that children thrive in caring and supporting classrooms. I believe this to be true. When students learn what they want to learn and they feel safe when doing so, our students can achieve more than we as teachers can even imagine. Since my classroom is an inviting, positive and safe place for my student thrive in, My students are able to feel free to explore and learn about the world around them.

As a teacher, it is my job to have an inviting classroom for all students to feel safe and comfortable in. I achieve this by having an open door policy, meaning that any student can come into my room with a problem and we can fix it together. Since I feel that the classroom is not only a place for learning but also a place to have group discussions on different current topics, my students feel free to voice their opinion and not feel embarrassed or ashamed about their  point of view. I also like to keep a positive attitude, I truly feel that positivity is contagious and my hope is that this outlook on life will pass on to my students.

Although I am just starting my education career, I have done some work with differentiated learning and peer groups. As you can see through my lesson plans, I have differentiated my lessons to all learners and have been able to work with students who has English as their additional language.  Through peer interaction and group work, students are able to collaborate and help each other more than I could. I have found that students learn and understand better from their peers, especially when the student speaks a different language. Students that understand a concept love to explain and help their friends that do not. This allows for engagement from both the achieve and non achiever with minimal shout downs.  Since I am just starting out in my career I feel that my philosophy will change because my experiences in the classroom will change. You are welcome to follow my progress as a student of education and the start of my career on my blog at chelseysharpe.wordpress.com.
